The objective of this simulation is to develop the student's ability to recognize and respond to natural wind shifts while sailing upwind. You will learn to identify headers and lifts by observing the wind indicator, the boat's heading, and the behavior of the sail.
The goal is not to react to every change in the wind. The goal is to recognize the change, understand what it means for your course, and make the correct sailing decision.
An ILCA cannot sail directly into the wind, so you must zig-zag upwind. For this simulation, your target upwind angle is 45° to the wind. When the wind direction changes, your boat's relationship to the windward mark changes immediately.
| Shift Type | Wind Vane Reaction | Sailing Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Wind moves away from your bow | Drifts outward | HEAD UP |
| Wind moves toward your bow | Enters BOW zone | Consider TACK |
See how the wind shifts and learn the difference between a header and a lift.
Observe the wind indicator, boat heading, and sail as the wind changes.
LearnSail in a shifting wind and practice recognizing headers and lifts as they happen.
Use the wind indicator, boat heading, and sail behavior to decide how to respond.
PracticeSail without being told when the wind has shifted or what the shift means.
Recognize the change and make your own sailing decision before the opportunity is lost.
Take the ChallengeDon't sail the boat by the compass alone. Sail by the wind. When the wind changes, recognize the shift, understand what it is doing to your course, and make the right sailing decision.
